Kurt has a five years old son, his son likes toys very much especially those his friends owned. Kurt also bought a “toy”—Laser Pointer— for his son as his son requested. But a few days later, Kurt forfeited his son’s “toy”.

The toy Kurt bought for his son is a laser pointer, it is very mall and like a pen, the laser pointer emits red laser beam. One night, his son pointed the laser beam on Kurt’s eyes. At first, there is no wrong with his eyes, but after a while, his eyes were hurt, and they water. Kurt had to go to see doctor.

Why were Kurt’s eyes hurt? It is because that there is a semiconductor laser which is an LED inside the laser pointer, and on the front side of the laser pointer, there is an optical lens for focusing.

Experts believe that, although the laser pointer is with low energy laser and there were no harmful to skin, clothing, etc. and the laser beam emitted by laser pointer doesn’t contain non-visible light beam or other harmful radiation. But scientists have found that the laser beam irradiated human eye lens can cause cataracts. Secondly, after watching the dazzling light beam for a long time, it will also affect the optic nerve and central nervous system, people will appear dizzy or nausea. Therefore, never point at mirrors or highly reflective surface, or use laser beam pointing at other people’s face or eyes.

As the laser beam energy is concentrated, so it is harmful to people. People who used it should be careful.
